15 Amazing Adventures for Kids without leaving the house

On Sunday night we watched Baby’s Day Out, based on a storybook of the same name. The baby loved the story so much and knew it so well that he felt like he was having an adventure without leaving the house. Here are some ideas for virtual adventures while we can’t leave home. And just like the baby in the movie, when we actually can explore these places, we will do it with even more delight and vigour because we have virtually experienced them!

  1. Hop on board with The Canal & River Trust

Sail away with your imagination. This site offers lots of natural and craft activities to keep the kids busy and away from screens!

2. The British Museum

You can enjoy virtual tours of The British Museum and find detailed explorer trails for a whole host of interesting exhibits.

3. London Transport Museum

While we can’t Go Underground or hop on a bus so easily at the moment, there are lots of transport-themed activities online here for you to enjoy at home.

4. The Royal Air Force Museum

This site boasts virtual tours of their museums in London and Cosford. You can click on interesting links to bring the kids’ learning to life, such as weekly Museum Maths activities such as Battle Coordinates and Falling Fractions related to Parachutes falling from the sky. They also share weekly RAF stories to help encourage and inspire fantastic readers and amazing writers. They also share lovely family resources to inspire kids to imagine, make, explore all kinds of aircraft-related projects.

5. The Science Museum

The hands-on activity floor at the Science Museum is usually heaving in Half Term, Thankfully they have supplied lots of ideas for us to try at home without battling the crowds.

6. Roman Baths

Bathe virtually in Roman Culture with virtual tours, stories, games, and activities online.

7. Stonehenge

Immerse yourself virtually in this stunning English Heritage site, from the comfort of your sofa, without getting stuck in traffic.

8. National Maritime Museum Greenwich

Celebrate Chinese New Year 2021 with the online resources from the National Maritime Museum.

9. The Royal Observatory Greenwich

Enjoy stargazing and fact-finding about the planets through video tours and workshops hosted online by the Royal Observatory.

10. The Cutty Sark

Enjoy virtual tours of the Cutty Sark, focusing on all aspects of life and treasures, including toys. They even host a special Toddler Time online.

11. A look around Shakespeare’s Birthplace Trust

Soak up Shakespearean Culture and enjoy making crafts based on many of Shakespeare’s spectacular plays such as a Dreamcatcher or a tiny Fairy home inspired by A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

12. Wild webcams Essex Wildlife Trust

We usually spend a lot of our school holiday enjoying Forest School activities at the Essex Wildlife Trust. They share their Wildlife Webcams online so that we can get a close-up view of the animals, including a new Badger webcam. Some visitor centres are also offering some online workshops.

13. Fuel your imagination with The British Motor Museum

For Car enthusiasts, The British Motor Museum is bringing the showroom to you and offers activities for kids at home while we can’t hit the open road.

14. National Museums Liverpool

The Museums of Liverpool offer videos and resources online for fascinating topics such as The Titanic, Slavery, Ancient Egypt, Greek Mythology, Archeology, and The Victorians.

15. Barnsley Museums bringing Indiana Jones adventures and more to you at home this Half Term

Barnsley Museums have obviously taken a great deal of time and effort to create activities to keep families busy and happy at home, especially this Half Term. Here are just a few links to whet your appetite.
